Camp Rainbow is a wonderful opportunity for teens and adults of all ages to share their compassion with children. Each spring, Hospice Support Care actively recruits volunteers for Big Buddies to act as mentors, friends, and chaperones during our weekend camp. If you are interested, please contact the Children’s Bereavement Coordinator for an application.
Qualifications for Big Buddies:
- Must be 14 years of age or older
- Clear background check
- Three positive personal references
- Experience with children
- Experience with bereavement issues helpful, but not required
- Ability to participate in most physical activities and all emotional activities
- First Aid and CPR training helpful but not necessary
- Willing to provide one-on-one companionship, support and friendship
- Willing to lead at least one activity for a small or large group
- If you enjoy fishing, you need a current fishing license and a special trout-fishing permit (required by Graves Mountain Lodge)
Duties as a Big Buddy:
- Attend a three-hour training session prior to the camp
- Contact your Little Buddy by phone for a introduction prior to camp
- Supervise your Little Buddy at all times
- Be a compassionate listener to your Little Buddy and all campers
- Share responsibilities with fellow volunteers
- Lead and participate in activities such as circles, games, arts and crafts, hiking, etc.
- Help care for the grounds and keep them clean
- Welcome your Little Buddy’s family at the close of camp
